World Surfing League Championship Tour A Shot In The Arm For Local Business

With one of the largest global surfing events making its home in Narrabeen in April this year, businesses and locals are hopeful this will be the massive boost the Northern Beaches has needed after the Christmas COVID restrictions.

Member for Manly James Griffin, joined Member for Pittwater, Rob Stokes at Narrabeen beach today to announce that NSW had been successful in securing a World Surfing League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) event to be held at Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches.

Mr Griffin said this will be a huge boost for the local tourism economy up and down the beaches as competitors, their support teams and surfers from around Australia come to participate and watch the events.
“This sort of event in the Northern Beaches is exactly what is needed to bring our community together and give local business the shot in the arm to regain some of the losses experienced over summer,” Mr Griffin said.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming more visitors to the area over the 10 day event and encourage people to eat, stay and enjoy all there is to offer in Manly and surrounding beaches.”

The announcement follows the NSW Government’s commitment to offer assistance to local businesses affected adversely by the Christmas COVID lockdown. The Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic, happening in place of Gold Coast’s Snapper Rocks event, will coincide with the Government’s $25 Dine and Discover vouchers also becoming available for people to cash in at local restaurants and venues while they come to watch the surfing.

President of the Manly Business Chamber, Ms Charlotte Rimmer, expressed her excitement on the WSL championship event coming to the Beaches.

“What a fantastic opportunity for Manly and the Northern Beaches to showcase both the natural beauty of the area and our hospitality,” Ms Rimmer said.

“Since COVID-19 struck, our businesses have suffered through more than one lockdown and have shown the resilience required in this “new world”. We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors to stay, spend their Dine & Discover vouchers and get to know us better.”
